The worthiness of God - 23 July 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Psalm 146:2, NIV

Gratitude is not merely a response to what God does; it is a heart posture and way of life that flows from understanding who God is. In Psalm 146, the psalmist makes a personal commitment to the Lord, saying: “I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.” This is not simply an emotional response to a good day; it is a deliberate decision to honour God through every season of life.

Many people allow their gratitude to be determined by their circumstances. When life is going well, it is easy to thank God. However, when difficulties arise, praise often becomes less frequent. Scripture teaches us that God's praiseworthiness is not dependent on our situation. He remains good when we experience success, and he remains good when we walk through trials. His character does not change with our circumstances.

Choosing to live with gratitude transforms the way we view life. We begin to focus on God's faithfulness rather than our fears. We remember his provision in the past and gain courage for the future. Gratitude reminds us of what God has already done for us and that he continues to work in our lives even when we cannot always see it.

Take a moment to consider the blessings you enjoy today. The gift of life, the ability to breathe, the love of family and friends, the privilege of knowing God and the hope we have in Christ. Many of these blessings we easily take for granted, yet each one is evidence of God's goodness and grace. Every day, his mercies are new, and every breath is a gift from his hand.

Gratitude also has the power to guard our hearts against discontentment. The more we focus on what God has already given us, the less we are consumed with what we do not have. It brings peace to our hearts and enables us to live with greater joy. Instead of constantly striving for more, we learn to rest in God's provision and trust his timing.

Today, like the psalmist, make an intentional decision to praise the Lord. Not only when life is easy, but every day. Let gratitude shape your thoughts, words and actions. As praise becomes a habit, you will find your heart growing closer to God and that your life becomes filled with hope, peace and joy.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, today I choose to praise you for as long as I live. Thank you for your goodness, love and faithfulness that surround me each day. Help me not to focus on my problems, but on you. Fill my heart with gratitude and let my life become a continual song of praise that brings honour and glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
