Our approach to life - 22 July 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the ‘gods’ I will sing your praise. I will bow down towards your holy temple and will praise your name for your unfailing love and your faithfulness, for you have so exalted your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame.  Psalm 138:1-2, NIV

David declares that he will give thanks to the Lord with all his heart. Not with only one part of his life, not only when circumstances are favourable, but with his entire being. These verses remind us that gratitude is more than a positive attitude, it is a posture of the heart that recognises God as the source of every good and perfect gift.

It is easy to be thankful when prayers are answered and when life unfolds according to our own plan, yet Scripture teaches us that genuine gratitude is not dependent upon favourable circumstances. Rather, it flows from a relationship with God. When we understand who he is, his love, grace, faithfulness, mercy and goodness, we discover that we always have reasons to thank him.

David’s life was filled with both victories and challenges. He experienced seasons of joy, but he also endured persecution, disappointment and loss. Nevertheless, he continually returned to a posture of gratitude. Why? Because his focus was not primarily on his circumstances but on the character of God. He knew that God remained faithful even when life felt uncertain. He understood that though situations may change, God never does.

Gratitude changes the way we approach life. When we thank God with our whole hearts, we begin to recognise his hand at work in more areas of our lives. We see his provision in our daily needs, his guidance in difficult decisions, and his comfort during seasons of hardship. Things that once seemed ordinary become extraordinary when we acknowledge them as gifts from his loving hand.

A grateful heart also impacts those around us – it brings hope, joy and encouragement. People are often drawn to someone who acknowledges God's goodness even in the midst of challenges. Gratitude becomes more than a personal blessing, it becomes a testimony of God’s work in our lives and points others toward his faithfulness and reminds them that he is worthy of trust and praise.

Today, take a moment to thank God with your whole heart. Reflect on his faithfulness in the past, his presence in your life today, and his promises for the future. Allow gratitude to fill your heart until it overflows in praise. When we thank God wholeheartedly, we discover the joy, peace and confidence that comes from a life centred on him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you with all my heart. Thank you for your love, grace, mercy and faithfulness that sustain me each day. Help me to recognise your goodness in every area of my life. May my heart always be filled with gratitude, and may my life become a song of praise that brings honour and glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
