A month of Proverbs - 11 March 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.  Proverbs 21:2, KJV

We as people have a remarkable ability to justify ourselves. We can motivate and justify almost any decision or action so that it seems right to us. This verse shows, however, that God looks beyond our reasons and excuses – he looks at our hearts.

The heart here refers to our motives: why do we do what we do? Two people can perform the same good deed, but for different reasons. One may do it out of love; and the other perhaps for recognition. Outwardly it looks the same, but God sees the difference.

This truth is not meant to make us afraid, but to draw us closer to honesty. When we ask God to examine our hearts, we invite him to help us grow. He shows us areas in our lives where pride, jealousy, or even insecurity may be driving our actions.

True spiritual maturity begins when we are willing to say, “Lord, show me what is really going on in my heart.” It requires humility, but it leads to freedom. Because when our motives are purified, we live with greater peace and integrity.

God is more interested in who we are becoming than in what we do. When we present our hearts to be examined by him, he shapes our character so that our lives can truly reflect him.

Prayer: Lord, you know my heart better than I know it myself. Test my motives and wash away what does not come from you. Help me to live fora you with a sincere and pure heart. Amen.
