A month of Proverbs - 12 March 2026

Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6, KJV
This verse is often associated with parenting, but the principle extends beyond children in a home. It’s about influence, direction, and shaping lives over time. Teaching a child “the right way” means teaching them more than rules and discipline – it means passing on values, faith, and wisdom through example and relationship.
Children not only learn from what we say, but especially from what we do. They observe how we respond to stress, how we speak to others, and how we trust God in difficult times. These everyday moments shape their understanding of life and God. Consistent, loving guidance shapes the foundation on which they build their lives.
The promise that a child will not turn from it when they are older does not mean there will never be challenging phases, it means that a seed sown early can take deep root. Even if someone strays, that early truth can resurface later and provide direction.
This verse also reminds us that we all have influence – teachers, family, friends, and mentors. Someone observes your life and learns from it, whether you realise it or not. That’s why it is important to stay on God’s path ourselves, so we can lead others in the right direction.
God entrusts us with the precious task of shaping others. When we do this in dependence on him, he can use our imperfect efforts to make a lasting impact on others.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the privilege of influencing others. Give me wisdom, patience, and love to live an exemplary life that points to you. Guide me to sow the right seeds in the lives of others. Amen.
