A month of Proverbs - 3 March 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23, KJV

This verse speaks to the heart as the centre of our thoughts, desires, and motives – not just our emotions. Everything we do begins in our hearts, which is why God instructs us to guard it carefully.

Our hearts are influenced daily by what we see, hear, and think about. Negative words, comparison, fear, and bitterness can quietly take root, and if left unchecked, they can begin to control our attitude and actions. An unguarded heart leads to a restless life.

Guarding our hearts does not mean being cold or closed off. It means intentionally choosing what we allow to shape our inner world. This requires regularly testing our thoughts against God’s truth. When lies like "I am not good enough" or "nothing will change" arise, we must replace them with what God’s Word says.

A healthy heart brings life. It leads to patience, love, and wisdom in difficult situations. When our hearts are full of peace, we respond differently to pressure and conflict. The quality of our lives is directly affected by the condition of our inner world.

God not only cares about our actions, but also about what drives them – our motives. When we allow him to cleanse and renew our hearts, he transforms us from the inside out.

Prayer: Lord, show me what in my heart does not come from you. Help me to fill my thoughts with your truth and guard my heart so that my life may honour you. Amen.
