Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV
This is one of the most well-known promises in the Bible, yet also one of the most difficult to truly live out. Naturally, we tend to rely on ourselves. We reason, plan, and try to control things. Yet this verse tells us that true security is not found in our own understanding, but in trusting God.
To trust with your whole heart means not only turning to God in major crises, but also in the small everyday decisions. It means involving him in your work, your relationships, your finances, and even your fears. When we “acknowledge him” in all our ways, we recognise that he is Lord over every part of our lives – not just the “spiritual” parts.
The promise is not that the path will always be easy, but that he will make it straight if we trust him with it. A straight path means one with direction, purpose, and God’s presence. Even when there are uphill battles, we never walk alone. God sees the bigger picture that we cannot see.
Often, we become anxious because we try to figure out the future ourselves. This verse invites us to place our hand in God’s instead and take one step at a time. Trust engenders rest. When we stop carrying everything ourselves, it makes room for peace.
Prayer: Lord, I acknowledge that I often rely on my own understanding. Help me to trust you with all my heart today and to acknowledge you in everything I do. Guide my path and help me rest in your direction. Amen.
