A Psalm or Five: Psalm 23 - 7 October 2025

Even if I walk through a deep and dark valley, I will not be afraid, because You, O Lord, are with me. You protect me like a shepherd protects his sheep with his stick and his staff. Psalm 23:4, The Bible for the Deaf
As a teenager, I enjoyed paging through the book of Psalms. Whenever I was unsure about what to read, I would often turn to a Psalm. Based on a quick Google search, Psalm 23 is considered the most well-known Psalm in the Bible. This popularity likely stems from its comforting nature – particularly in verse four.
The “deep and dark valley” as referenced in the Scripture verse above, is an experience that resonates with everyone. Few of us escape the challenges of suffering or sadness, but we should also recognise that the deep and dark valley looks different for each of us and changes as we navigate the various seasons of life.
Can you recall what your “dark valley” looked like during your teenage years? In your twenties, it may have taken on a different appearance. When you have children, you encounter new fears, and as you enter middle age, you might face a whole new kind of valley filled with aches, pains or serious illness.
Unfortunately, life is full of these dark valleys. Perhaps that is why Psalm 23 is so cherished. During tough times, we need to be reminded that we are not alone and that we have a protector.
I don’t know what your dark valley looks like; perhaps you are fortunate and are not currently in such a place. Maybe it will still be a long time before you see the light again. Today, remind yourself of the psalmist’s words: you are not alone, and God will protect you.
Cliché or not, there’s a very good reason why Psalm 23 is the world’s most loved Psalm. I continue to hold onto it.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are my shepherd and that you will lead me to green pastures. Thank you for being with me, even when I walk through deep and dark valleys. Amen.
