God is our judge and protector - 26 February 2025

But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. Psalm 94:22, NIV
Psalm 94 is a prayer and a reflection on righteousness and justice. It speaks to those who ask where God is when injustice and evil are flourishing. This psalm assures us that God is just and he will eventually bring justice.
In the first part of the psalm, the author calls out to God, the Judge of the earth, to intervene against the wicked and their deeds. It reminds us that we can approach God when we see injustice around us – he is not a passive observer, but an active Judge who will judge according to his time and wisdom.
The psalm also speaks about the injustice that the wicked commit against the vulnerable: they trample on the poor, the widows and the orphans. Yet, even in the darkest moments, God’s presence and comfort are affirmed to his people. “Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?” (Psalm 94:9). This question strengthens our confidence that nothing is hidden from God – he sees and he knows.
A central theme of Psalm 94 is that God disciplines his children, not as punishment, but to teach them and draw them back to him. It is a reminder that he is a loving Father who wants to direct his children to live according to his ways.
The concluding verses of the psalm offer an encouragement: God will protect his people. He is a haven for all who turn to him. It is this promise of his faithfulness and strength that we can carry through any time of injustice or hardship.
Prayer: Lord, you are my rock and refuge in the midst of injustice. I trust in your righteousness and know you are always there to protect and comfort me. Help me to fix my hope in you, regardless of what I am experiencing in the world around me. Amen
