Joy and security in God - 6 February 2025

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11, NIV
Psalm 16 is a song of trust and joy in the Lord. It reminds us of the blessings we experience when we place our hope and security in God. David, the writer of the psalm, declares here that the Lord is his refuge, inheritance and counsellor, and he testifies to the abundant joy found in God’s presence.
Psalm 16:1 begins with the words: “Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.” This simple but powerful request shows us that true security can only be found with God. In the midst of challenges and storms, we can, like David, entrust our lives to God, knowing that he protects and guides us. He is our refuge – not only in times of need, but also in the everyday moments of life.
Psalm 16:5-6 puts it so beautifully: “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” These words remind us that our joy does not depend on material possessions or circumstances. Our greatest treasure is God himself. He is our inheritance and when we find joy in him, our lives will be transformed with abundant contentment.
Another highlight in this psalm is in verse 11, which underscores the eternal nature of our joy in God. Here we are assured that God is showing us the way of life – a path filled with joy and promises of his love. This life begins here and now in a relationship with him, but continues for eternity.
Whatever your situation is today, remember that God is your anchor. Find your security, joy and hope in him. He is faithful and his presence brings true life. Let this psalm encourage you to keep your eyes on him, because there is no better place to put your trust.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that I can find my refuge and joy in you. Guide me on the path of life and help me to trust you always. May I live each day in the abundant joy of your presence. Amen
