The Power of God’s Word - 5 February 2025

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105, NIV
Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and it is full of praise and reflection on the treasures found in God’s Word. This psalm reminds us that the Bible is not just a book, but a living guide that helps us to understand God’s will and live in obedience to him.
In a world so often marked by doubt and confusion, God’s Word offers light on our path. Psalm 119:105 strikingly describes it as a lamp to our feet and a light to our life’s journey (path). A lamp does not always show you the whole path ahead, but it gives enough light for the next step. Likewise, God guides us one step at a time. Our job is to trust and obey his guidance.
Psalm 119 also reminds us of the value of obedience. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” When we come to know God’s Word and keep it in our hearts, it becomes a powerful weapon against temptation and sin. It helps us to live according to his will, and keeps us away from deception and self-destruction.
God’s Word also offers encouragement and comfort. Psalm 119:50 says, “My comfort in my suffering is this: your promise preserves my life.” When we are going through challenges, the promises of the Scriptures can uplift and strengthen us. It assures us of God’s love, his faithfulness and his omnipotence.
Let us not forget that the Word is not just something that we read, but something we apply. It requires of us a mindset of humility, obedience and a deep dependence on God. Through his Word, we learn to trust in him and our faith grows stronger as we experience his guidance.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for your Word that guides and enlightens me. Help me not only to read it, but to apply it with dedication in my life. Give me the courage to trust you in all circumstances. Amen
