God is our refuge and strength - 4 February 2025

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1, NIV
The book of Psalms reminds us that God is on our side in every circumstance. Psalm 46 is a special promise of God’s presence and help in the midst of storms and chaos. It reminds us that we have a safe hiding place in the Lord, irrespective of what is happening around us.
In the world we live in, life can sometimes feel overwhelming with challenges such as financial pressure, illness, grief, or uncertainty about the future. Psalm 46 teaches us that God is not distant or uninvolved in such moments. He is actively present and ready to strengthen us. His presence is not just temporary, but he walks with us every day, even if we feel alone.
Psalm 46:2 says, “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” This imagery describes unimaginable chaos, but the psalmist reminds us that our faith rests in an unchanging God. When life falters, God remains steadfast. We are not invited to avoid life’s crises, but rather to trust God in them.
Psalm 46:10 also reminds us of the value of rest: 'Be still, and know that I am God.' It is in our quiet times with the Lord that we experience his peace. Silence does not mean that we are passive, but that we choose to place God’s presence above our fears and worries. It is in the presence of God where our hearts are strengthened and our faith renewed.
May you remember today that God is your safe haven – your rock in times of storms and your peace in times of turmoil. He invites you to surrender your burdens to him and rest in his strength. Your challenge may be great, but God’s love and strength are always greater.
Prayer: Lord, you are my refuge and strength. Help me trust in you, even when everything around me is uncertain. Let me feel your presence and strengthen my faith in you. Thank you for never leaving me and for guiding me every day. Amen
