I like God because he knows me as no-one else does

Jesus knew their thoughts …Luke 11:17

I was in a church service where the pastor asked us: “Imagine that the person sitting next to you knows exactly what you thought, said and did during the past week.” There was a silence in the church and just the thought that those sitting next to us know what we were up to the past week, made us longed for a glass of cold water.

Fortunately I felt better after a few moments. The fact that no one in the church knows what my thoughts were during the past week, what I have said and done, reassured me. I was relieved, not even my neighbour knew.

On the other hand, God knows everything. As the cameras of the TV show "Big Brother" register everything that is happening in the Big Brother house, nothing in my life passes God's attention. Yet God does not put everything he knows about me in a book in order to write me off and to forget about me. God did not turn his back on me when he actually came to know me better. On the contrary – God keeps on declaring his love for me. In fact, he who knows me best likes me most. This is the greatest miracle that I can imagine.

God does not merely like me because he knows my positive sides. The love of God is not blind. He knows all the dirt and dark sides of me. But none of this keeps him from loving me. Before him I need not keep myself important, put my best foot forward. He likes me anyway. Before God I need not pretend to be better than what I am.

He knows who I am – who I really am.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you love me even though you know who I really am, and what I really think and say and do. You are wonderfully gracious. Amen.
