Gratitude is a choice - 27 July 2026

Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. Psalm 135:3, NIV
Gratitude begins when we take our eyes off ourselves and fix them on God. The psalmist calls God’s people to praise the Lord because he is good. He does not tell us to praise God only when life is free from problems or when everything is going according to plan. Rather, God’s goodness alone is reason enough for praise and thanksgiving.
We live in a world that constantly encourages us to want more, achieve more and obtain more. This mindset can easily cause us to focus on what we lack rather than on what we already have. When that happens, gratitude diminishes and discontentment begins to grow. The Word of God teaches us a different way of living. It reminds us that true joy is not found in what we own or accomplish, but in the Lord and our relationship with him.
God’s goodness is displayed in countless ways throughout our lives. We see it in his protection when we are unaware of dangers around us. We experience it in his provision when our needs are met. We feel it in his peace when the world around us is unsettled. Every new day, every breath we take, and every opportunity to experience his love is evidence of his goodness and grace.
Gratitude is also a choice. There will be days when it feels easy to praise God, and there will be days when our emotions pull us in the opposite direction. On those days, gratitude becomes an intentional act of faith. We choose to praise God because of who he is, even when we do not fully understand what he is doing. Faith-filled gratitude declares that God's character remains trustworthy regardless of our circumstances.
When we make gratitude a consistent heart posture, our hearts begin to change. We become more aware of God's presence and less consumed by our problems. Our faith grows because we are continually reminded of his faithfulness. Our peace deepens because we learn to place our trust in him rather than in our own understanding.
Take a few moments today to be still before the Lord. Reflect on the blessings he has already poured into your life. Thank him for his love, grace, forgiveness, provision and constant care. Allow your heart to overflow with praise. As you do, you will discover that gratitude is not merely a response to God's blessings — it is a way of life that fills the soul with joy, strengthens faith and draws us closer to him.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I praise you because you are good. Thank you for the countless ways you bless and care for me each day. Forgive me when I focus on what is lacking instead of your abundant goodness. Help me to cultivate a grateful heart that honours you in every circumstance. May my life be filled with praise and thanksgiving, bringing glory and honour to your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
