Seasons - 16 July 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV

Paul gives an instruction that sounds simple yet is often challenging to live out: “give thanks in all circumstances." Notice that he does not say we should be thankful for every circumstance, but in every circumstance. This means that regardless of what is happening around us, we can still find reasons to thank God.

Life is comprised of seasons. There are times of abundance and times of need, seasons of joy and seasons of sorrow, moments of victory and periods of struggle. Our emotions often rise and fall with these changing seasons, but God’s character never changes. He remains faithful when life feels unsettled. He remains loving when we are disappointed. He remains present when we feel alone. Because of this, we can be thankful even when we do not understand everything that is happening.

Thankfulness says, “Lord, I may not understand this situation, but I trust that you are still at work.” Thanking God during difficult circumstances declares that our faith is greater than our fears and concerns. his goodness rather than on our problems.

One of the wonderful results of gratitude is that it changes our perspective. When we begin to count the ways that God has already worked in our lives, we become less focused on what is lacking. We remember his provision, his protection, his mercy and his love. Suddenly, our challenges do not seem quite as overwhelming because we are reminded of how great our God truly is.

Gratitude also brings peace. It helps us lay our worries before the Lord and rest in the confidence that he is in control. A grateful heart is not a heart without problems; it is a heart that has learned to focus on God over those problems. It understands that while circumstances change, God's faithfulness remains constant.

Today, regardless of your circumstances, choose gratitude. Thank God for his presence, his promises and his unfailing faithfulness. Thank him for the prayers he has answered, the strength he has provided, and the grace he gives each day. As you do, you will discover that gratitude draws your heart closer to him and fills you with hope for the journey ahead.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you are good and faithful in every season of my life. Help me not to focus on my circumstances, but on you. Teach me to be thankful in every situation and to recognise your hand at work even when the path is difficult. Fill my heart with peace, trust and joy as I keep my eyes fixed on you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
