Closer to God - 15 Julie 2026

I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name for ever. Psalm 86:12, NIV
In Psalm 86, David declares that he will praise the Lord with all his heart. This is not a half-hearted expression of thanks or a reluctant acknowledgment of God’s goodness. It is the natural response of someone who has personally experienced God’s love, grace and faithfulness. Genuine gratitude affects more than our words, it touches every part of our being.
We live in a time when people often focus on what they still want rather than on what they already have. Human nature tends to become accustomed to blessings and gain and then immediately looks toward the next desire or need. That is why it is so important to take a moment to pause regularly and remember God’s goodness. Gratitude grows when we intentionally pay attention to the many ways that God is working in our lives.
If we look back over the past year, month, or even week, we will find countless reasons to thank God. Perhaps he protected you in a situation you never even realised was dangerous. Perhaps he carried you through a difficult season, provided for your needs when you had lack, or sent someone to encourage you at exactly the right moment. Often, God’s hand becomes more visible when we look back than when we try to look ahead.
Gratitude changes our perspective. When we focus on God’s blessings, negative thoughts and constant worry begin to lose their grip on our minds and hearts. This does not mean our problems disappear, but it reminds us that God is greater than any challenge we face. Gratitude helps us live with confidence rather than fear because it continually points us back to God’s faithfulness.
There is also something deeply powerful about a grateful heart – it draws us closer to God. The more we praise him for who he is and for what he has done, the more aware we become of his presence. Our worship becomes sincerer, our faith grows stronger, and our joy runs deeper. A posture of gratitude shifts our attention from temporary circumstances to the unchanging character of God.
Today, choose to praise God with your whole heart. Do not wait for perfect circumstances before expressing your gratitude. Thank him for his love, his grace, his protection, and his provision. As gratitude fills your heart, you will discover that joy and peace naturally follow. A thankful heart sees God’s goodness more clearly and finds strength in his unfailing faithfulness.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I praise you with all my heart. Thank you for your love, goodness and faithfulness in my life. Help me never to take your blessings for granted, but to live each day with a spirit of gratitude. Open my eyes to recognise your hand at work in my life, and fill my heart with praise, joy and thanksgiving for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
