Fearfully and wonderfully made - 4 May 2026
Imogen Campbell
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14, NIV
While distracted and rushing to get things done, my foot rolled awkwardly on uneven paving. The concrete was unforgiving, and I immediately knew that something was wrong. As pain radiated from my ankle, I surmised that it was probably a sprain. I would be right as rain in no time, I thought, since I had not heard the dreaded pop. Had I also not just prayed for the impossible?
Over the next week, the bruising only got worse, on both sides of my foot and up my leg. I was jolted out of my reverie, and sent for x-rays that confirmed a fracture. All of a sudden, I needed an orthopaedic surgeon’s opinion and there was mention of a pin. None of it appealing, in the least.
Weeks of wearing a moon boot followed – non-weight bearing was the verdict. I am pleased to say God was in every detail. I had great professionals take care of me, crutches were sent over by neighbours, a generous benefactor supplied the boot and God’s provision was clear all round.
For someone who loves walking almost every day, immobilisation had its own challenges. But, I found myself appreciating my body, mobility and feet so much more.
Boring, mundane, run-of-the-mill – I realised how ordinary, day-to-day humdrum was, in fact, a privilege. It took an injury to teach me gratitude. I was filled with awe when I reflected on how much God had bestowed upon us from the day we were born. How lavish was the blessing.
We are biologically engineered marvels with supercomputers for brains. Our creative potential and innovative capabilities are immense. None of us is an accident; we are a reflection of the Master Craftsman.
I also have a renewed appreciation for the mechanics of my feet. We have been kitted out with mobility-enhancing features – 26 bones, 33 joints, as well as over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments per foot. God’s design is amazing.
Please join me this month as we study some passages in the Word revealing the symbolism of the foot and how to stand tall amid all of life’s challenges.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for equipping us for life, help me and those reading along, to consider how lavishly you have blessed us. May we never take for granted every minor detail that makes us, and life, so special. Amen.
