A Psalm or Five: Psalm 46 - 9 October 2025

Charlea Grey

God protects us and makes us strong. He is always there to help us when we have trouble. That is why we will not be afraid, even if the earth trembles and the mountains fall into the sea, even if the water of the sea roars and makes a lot of foam and its big waves shake the mountains. Psalm 46:1-3, The Bible for the Deaf

I don’t mind admitting that I’m a bit of a control freak. It’s just part of who I am. I enjoy planning, I like to know what’s coming, and I prefer to maintain control over the things I can manage.

However, we don’t live in a world where we can control everything and everyone around us. In fact, most of the time, things feel rather disorderly. For someone who values being in control, that can be deeply unsettling.

At first glance, Psalm 46 – much like Psalm 91 – appears to focus on God’s protection, and that is true. However, when I reflect on verses 2 and 3, I realise it’s not just about God shielding us during times of chaos, unpredictability or hardship. To me, it emphasises that God is in control.

This realisation is where I ultimately find comfort when everything around me feels overwhelming. It reassures me that God is in control and that I can let go. Let’s be honest: trying to control everything can be absolutely exhausting.

To know that God is there when your world is shaking, when the waves threaten to drown you, when the mountains around you grow taller – that’s one of the greatest gifts he gives us. Sometimes we need to learn how to accept and embrace that incredible gift.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for always being in control. Thank you for carrying and protecting me when the sea gets rough and I no longer have control. Amen.
