But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8, GNT

 

Many of us feel anxious about witnessing our faith. We often wonder what to say and how to approach it. Questions may arise, such as: how, where, or when should I share my beliefs? Will I become the laughingstock of the people I am trying to reach? In today’s modern era, are people still open to hearing about Jesus, or will it embarrass them to listen to me?

 

During my Matric year, it was a tradition for the school inspector to visit and randomly select some learnersfor an oral examination on a subject without any prior preparation. As luck would have it, I was among those who were selected to do it in English. For a child in the Northern Cape back then, speaking fluent English was a real challenge. Suddenly encountering a situation where one has to witness about Jesus can also be a significant challenge. It is not because we do not love God, or do not want to talk about him, but because we are not always prepared to do so.

 

The question is: what should I say? Is it really necessary to say anything at all? Sometimes, it is, especially when the name of the Lord is used in vain. In those moments, I cannot remain silent, regardless of what others may think or say. However, there are many instances when I don’t need to say anything. My daily life should be sufficient for others to see that I believe in and love God. For example, when my neighbours see me going to church every Sunday, it serves as a powerful witness to my faith.

 

Witnessing ultimately means living according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is not always necessary to engage in complex theological discussions. All I need to do is share what I’ve learned from studying the Bible and then live in accordance with those teachings.

 

Prayer: Lord, please help me to be a faithful witness for you through my words and actions each day. Amen.
