Led by the Spirit - 5 September 2025
Ben Fourie
When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth ... John 16:13a, GNT
I often hear people say that the Holy Spirit has led them in their decisions. I sometimes wish I could have the same confidence about being led by the Spirit in my plans, especially when it comes to my role in building God’s house. How can I be sure about what to do or say to help advance the kingdom of God? I worry that my words or actions might be tearing down God’s house, rather than building it up.
What does it mean when Jesus tells us that the Spirit will lead us into all truth? I have heard various interpretations of this statement. Personally, I believe that the Spirit guides us primarily through the Bible. The Spirit inspired the authors of the Bible to write down everything we need to know about Jesus.
The New Testament contains only what Jesus revealed to his followers, but the Holy Spirit helps us understand what Jesus has said and done. The Spirit does not present new revelations, but illuminates the Bible so that we can comprehend its message and live by it.
We should still read and understand the Bible against the background of the age in which we live. The Spirit assists us in interpreting the Bible for the thoughts and perspectives of people in 2025, without changing any of the central truths.
How can I be sure that I understand the Word of God correctly? The Word itself provides us with specific guidelines. First, I should ask myself if what I plan to do or say will bring glory to God. Second, I should consider whether it will be spiritually beneficial to myself and my neighbour. Will it help me and others grow spiritually and contribute to the building of his church? If I can answer yes to all these questions, then I can be confident that what I have “heard” comes from the Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, I am eager to do what is right, but I must confess that I am not always sure of what to do or say. Please guide me, Holy Spirit, to follow your Word and lead me in the right direction. Amen.
