Calculating the cost - 1 September 2025

Ben Fourie

“If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and work out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job. Luke 14:28, GNT

When planning to construct a building, a quantity surveyor is typically contracted to calculate the projected costs based on the plans drawn up by the architect. A few weeks ago, I passed by a large construction site that had remained unfinished for several years. It appears that there was a significant miscalculation which led to a shortage of funds.

Jesus uses this metaphor to help us understand that the decision to follow him carries significant implications. him is not a decision to be taken lightly; we must calculate or consider whether we are ready for the demands of being his disciple. There is no margin for error. If you choose to follow him, you are committing yourself fully to working on his “building site.” You cannot take days off to go to the beach. Making this choice means allowing God to transform your thinking.

While doing your calculation, remember that no one, not even your family, can ever be more important than God. The interests of God’s kingdom must always take precedence over your own. Also, recognise that the path may be narrow and you will have to bear your cross. Many people who are important to you may not want to accompany you on this journey. Jesus stated in Luke 14:33, “none of you can be my disciples unless you give up everything you have.” This does not mean that you need to get rid of all your possessions, only that your belongings should never become more important than God.

Does Jesus want to put us off from becoming his followers? Never! He wants us to understand that following him cannot be done on the outer edge of our lives; it should always be at the centre.

Prayer: Lord, you have done so much for us. You left your heavenly home to come and live amongst us. You gave your life for us on the cross. Please help us to live our lives for you alone. Amen.
