Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. Psalm 80:3, NIV
Psalm 80 is a heart-warming prayer of Israel in a time of distress and humiliation. The author makes an urgent appeal to God for restoration and deliverance. This psalm reminds us that even in dark times, our focus must be on God – the only One who brings true restoration and deliverance.
The psalm begins with the call to the “Shepherd of Israel” (Psalm 80:1) to help his people. This image of God as the Shepherd signifies his care and protection. Like a good shepherd, he guides and feeds his flock. When we feel lost or threatened by life’s challenges, we can rely on this Shepherd to bring us back safely.
The chorus, repeated in verses 3, 7 and 19, is a cry for help: “Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.” These words capture a deep yearning for God’s presence. “Make your face shine on us” recalls the priestly blessing (Numbers 6:24-26) and signifies God’s grace, favour and the peace that only he can give.
The middle section of the psalm describes the national emergency. The metaphor of Israel as a vine (Psalm 80:8-15) reveals the truth that God himself planted and made them grow, but because of their disobedience, their blessing gave way to judgement. Yet, even here, there is hope: the vine can be restored if they return to God.
Psalm 80 teaches us to seek God, even when circumstances seem hopeless. It calls for an attitude of self-examination and a yearning for a renewed relationship with the Lord. As Israel prayed, we are challenged to come honestly before God and confess our shortcomings, while asking for his love and grace to restore us.
Prayer: Shepherd of my soul, let your face shine upon me. Lead me back to you when I go astray and bring repair to every broken aspect of my life. I trust in your mercy and your power to deliver me. Amen
