True fulfilment in God - 10 February 2025
Ruanne van Zyl
My mind and my body may grow weak, but God is my strength; he is all I ever need.
Psalm 73 is an honest reflection on the challenges of faith in a world where injustice often dominates. Asaph, the writer, wrestles with the question of why the wicked seem to prosper, while the righteous suffer. This question is timeless and remains relevant in our modern life. However, Asaph comes to a deep spiritual understanding: true fulfilment and meaning is found only in God.
At the beginning of the psalm, Asaph was overcome by his doubts and jealousy about the prosperity of the wicked. He describes how their lives seem easy and free of problems. This observation makes him wonder if his dedication to God is even worth it. He says in Psalm 73:13: “Is it for nothing, then, that I have kept myself pure and have not committed sin?” This feeling of discouragement is one that many of us can identify with when we are struggling to make sense of difficult circumstances.
Asaph’s perspective, however, changes dramatically when he says, “… until I went into your Temple. Then I understood what will happen to the wicked.” (Psalm 73:17) When he turns his focus away from the world and onto God, he realises that the prosperity of the wicked is temporary. Only those who take refuge in God will experience true and lasting fulfilment.
He further declares in Psalm 73:25: “What else have I in heaven but you? Since I have you, what else could I want on earth?" These words point to the deep fulfilment that comes when we view God as our everything. Our strength, material goods or even our health may fail us, but God remains our solid rock and our eternal reward.
Psalm 73 challenges us to re-evaluate our own priorities. Do we find true joy in worldly prosperity or in a life that honours God? When we put God first, we find not only peace in difficult times, but also the deep fulfilment that only he can offer.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see you as my greatest treasure. Even if all fails, give me the faith and confidence to hold on to you. You are my strength and my eternal hope. Amen
