Day 18: Small change, big change - 26 November 2019
Benescke Janse van Rensburg
Two Bloemfontein schools, Eunice Primary and Eunice High School, teamed up at the beginning of the year to make a difference in the community. Learners brought change to school every Friday. Along with a few cake sales and other fundraising initiatives throughout the year, enough money was raised to hand over a new mobile classroom to a local daycare center during last week. Zinette de Wet, principal of Eunice High School, says the slogan for the initiative says quite a lot: “Big change starts with small change.” That's what they wanted to teach the scholars with the initiative.
This also applies in our lives. Whether it's gaining a certain weight, getting your own business off the ground, getting out of debt, getting to know the Bible better, building better relationships with your children, or maybe building a bigger “Spark” back in your marriage - it all starts with a choice, followed by prayer, patience and perseverance in the little things that are constantly done. Small changes bring big changes over time.
In Zechariah 4 we read about a vision regarding the completion of the temple with the help of God's Spirit. It seems like a huge project - even impossible. Then in Zechariah 4:10 we read about the beginning of the project and with it a powerful message: “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin . . .”
In our lives, we should also not despise the power of that first step to change. This means that we “got out of the boat”. Now, as we walk towards our goal, may we keep our eyes on God. Let’s stay patient, steadfast in prayer with determination to reach our goal. Before long, we may look back with excitement that we reached a goal that seemed totally impossible. God bless.
Father God, thank you for strengthening me when I am weak. Please help me to take the first step to achieve (name specific goal). Also strengthen me to push through when things get tough. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
