And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth… you know him for he lives with you and will be in you.John 14:16,17b

Jesus’ life on earth is now drawing to a close. During the years of his earthly ministry, doing the work his Father sent him to do, Jesus has come to the point that he must make sure that the Father's plan for salvation is accomplished.

In his farewell address, he gives his followers an indication of what to expect. In this case these commands apply also to his followers in the ages to come and who live according to his commands.

Firstly Jesus prepares them for the coming of the Holy Spirit, while warning them also of persecution and dying. Like any teacher taking leave of his acolytes, he leaves them with a number of instructions. In this case however, there is an important difference in that the one who takes leave of them will remain in their midst until the end of time. What a glorious reassurance that Jesus does not leave us orphaned but sends us another advocate in his place.

Prayer: Lord, without you we are left to our own devices in a world without hope. Thank you Lord, that you sent your Spirit giving each one throughout the ages, new life in him. Amen
