Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present you requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

The times we live in where bloodshed and hatred amongst peoples have become commonplace and as the never ending litany of the dead and the dying sound on television stations throughout the world, we cannot but weep for the pain and suffering we see. Yet Paul encourages and urges us not to be bowed down by fear and worry.

Paul's teaching on prayer and worry can be compared with Christ's words in the Sermon on the Mount about anxiety and God's provision – “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life what you will eat or drink … But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.  Matthew 6:25; 38

When we are afraid and anxious, wondering what tomorrow will bring, Paul’s advice is to get down on your knees before the Father, who is in control of heaven and earth, and ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit. Paul describes this strength not as a violent or aggressive strength seeking retribution, but an inner strength that passes peace to others as you reach out and experience the full dimension of God’s love! Now is truly the time to test its length, plumb the depths and rise to the heights! Live fully in the fullness of God.

Prayer: Lord, the world today is a frightening place and fear has become our constant companion. Let the words of Paul, who knew all kinds of hardship, comfort and encourage us to trust in your wisdom and love to take care of us. Amen
