Let the words of my mouth….27 August 2013

Reading from Scripture
Exodus 20:16
Do not accuse anyone falsely. (bear false witness against thy neighbour: CEV)
You often hear someone remark: When that person says ‘Good morning’ you have to check the position of the sun! All because of the fact that you do not always know whom to trust and when you can rely on someone. The saying His word is his bond, is not always true. Even the appeal from Jesus: When you make a promise, say only "Yes" or "No." Anything else comes from the devil (Matt. 5:37 CEV), is not heeded.
It is actually a pity that we’ve become accustomed not to trust anyone. Unfortunately words uttered are often empty, and those printed or written mean very little. In simple language this commandment is referring to lying.
Even in court rooms, where people place their hand on the Bible vowing to speak the truth, perjury is committed. This is most probably the point made: to testify falsely against someone else. It is but one example. Let’s bring it closer to home:
• How many blatant untruths are being spread across the world by people expected to be trustworthy and truthful.
• In the garden of Eden Eve got convinced by half a truth – where doubt was created which made her wonder…..
• Many of us have become experts in twisting the truth just a little for it to appear like the genuine article. Just think of many people’s favourite past time: gossip!
Why does this happen? Mostly to gain the advantage over another. To save your own skin, too save face or to cover up some wrongdoing. Each of us can amaze the world with their own creative way of colouring the truth to their own liking. Even the so called ‘white lie’ is just a euphemism for the real McCoy.
We can be held equally accountable when remaining silent when we are expected to speak up. We do not want to become involved, because we prefer our position not to be compromised. Whistle blowers are victimised, transferred or dismissed. It is, therefore, more advantageous to keep quiet for one’s own sake.
Remember, there are always three sides to a story: your version, my version and the truth…..
Dear heavenly Father, help me honour all my promises today. Amen.
