Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.  But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.  The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:“Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”Revelation 12:7-12 (NIV)

There is a battle raging around us and we should know our enemy. Everyone knows of Satan but how much do we really know of him. Some people deny his existence, others caricature him as figure of fun with horns, tail and hooves.

The Bible has never made light of the power of Satan nor denied his existence. Satan is not a figment of our imagination. He is described as the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient to God.

If you have any doubts about who is running rampant with his evil angels in this world, look around you. Godless activities thrive at every level of our society.

Jesus gave us a penetrating insight into the personality of Satan. “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)

We would be like marshmallow in the hands of Satan if his power and dominion over believers was not broken at the cross. There God rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.  (Colossians 1:13)

As children of God, the Bible assures us that we can resist the devil and if we do so, he will flee from us.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, thank you that you have delivered us from the evil one for your love’s sake.  Amen
