Lifestyle of gratitude - 13 July 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.  Psalm 95:2, NIV

Gratitude can open our hearts to the presence of God. In Psalm 95, we are invited to come before the Lord with thanksgiving and joyful songs of praise. This invitation reminds us that gratitude is not merely an emotion, but it is an act of worship. When we thank God, we acknowledge his greatness, his goodness and his continual involvement in our lives.

It is significant that the psalmist tells us to enter God’s presence with thanksgiving. He does not say that we should wait until everything in our lives is perfect before we praise him. On the contrary, gratitude is often the pathway that draws us closer to God, even when we are facing difficult circumstances. When we choose to focus on thanking him, we shift our attention away from our problems and focus on the God who is greater than every challenge we face.

Many people wait for a reason to be thankful. They think, “When this problem is solved, I will thank God,” or “When this prayer is answered, I will rejoice.” But scripture teaches a different principle. Gratitude should not only come after the blessing; we should also be grateful before the breakthrough. We thank God not only for what he does, but also for who he is. He is faithful, loving, merciful, and unchanging.

When we develop a lifestyle of gratitude, start experiencing God’s presence more deeply. We become more aware of his love in the ordinary moments of life. We discover joy in simple blessings and find peace even when circumstances do not unfold according to our plans. Gratitude helps us live by faith rather than by fear.

Perhaps today you feel overwhelmed by worries or challenges. Maybe there are questions in your heart that remain unanswered. Begin by thanking God for his faithfulness. Thank him for his love, for your salvation, for his presence, and for the countless ways he has already provided for you. As you do, your heart will be encouraged by the reminder that you are not alone and that God is still at work in your life.

Let gratitude be your first response today. Enter God’s presence with praise and thanksgiving and rediscover the joy that flows from a heart that trusts him. The more we focus on God’s goodness, the more we recognise that his grace has been sustaining us all along.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that I can come boldly into your presence with thanksgiving and praise. Thank you for your love, faithfulness and mercies that are new every morning. Help me not to wait for perfect circumstances before I worship you, but to live each day with a grateful heart. Fill me with joy and peace as I fix my eyes on you and trust in your unfailing goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen
