God’s mercies - 7 July 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – Psalm 103:2, NIV

One of the greatest enemies of gratitude is forgetfulness. That is why David speaks to his own soul in Psalm 103, saying, "Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits." He understood how easily people become consumed by the challenges of the present and forget God’s goodness in the past. When we forget what God has done, our faith weakens and our hearts become dissatisfied. But when we remember his faithfulness, our hearts are filled with praise and thanksgiving.

Take a moment to reflect on your life. How many times has God provided when you did not know where the answer would come from? How often has he protected you without you even realising it? How many prayers has he already answered, perhaps in ways you never expected? If we are honest, we will recognise that God’s goodness has been far greater than we often remember.

Gratitude grows when we intentionally count God’s blessings. It requires us to pause and recognise his hand at work in our lives. Too often, we focus so intensely on the one thing we do not have that we overlook the many things God has already provided. A grateful heart chooses to see the blessings that surround us each day despite the problems we have.

The beauty of gratitude is that it draws us closer to God. When we thank him for his love, grace, and provision we are reminded of who he is. Our worship becomes sincerer, and our trust in him grows stronger. Gratitude helps us view life from God’s perspective rather than through the lens of our worries and fears.

Even on difficult days, there are reasons to be thankful. We can be grateful for God’s presence, his promises, and the assurance that he will never leave us nor forsake us. We can be thankful that his love does not depend on our performance and that his mercy and grace are new every morning.

Today, before focusing on what still needs to happen, take time to look back at what God has already done in your life. Allow the memories of his faithfulness to fill your heart with gratitude and praise. The more we remember his benefits and blessings, the more reasons we will find to worship him. A grateful heart not only honours God, but also experiences the joy and peace that come from trusting in his unfailing goodness.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for all the benefits and blessings you have poured into my life. Forgive me when I forget how good you have been to me. Help me to recognise your hand at work each day and to live with a heart full of gratitude. May my life be filled with praise for your love, grace, faithfulness and provision. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
