God and science - 19 June 2026

Ben Fourie

Were you there when I made the world? If you know so much, tell me about it.  Job 38:4,GNT

One evening my wife and I were listening to a song by Randall Wicomb, "Wie het die dinge gedoenor translated; Who has done these things. The song started me thinking about God and science. Although the song is based on Job 12, I was thinking of chapter 38. In this chapter, God uses different examples to show Job that He created everything. It is really worth reading.

The debate about God and science is an age old one. It is actually not only about creation and science alone, but also a debate about the existence of God. My bookshelf contains myriad books that delve into this topic. I have read them all, and I have read most of them more than once. "The Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin; "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking; "The Earth, An Intimate History" by Richard Fortey; "Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari and David Bodanis' "A Biography of the World’s Most Famous Equation". The last one is about Albert Einstein and other famous scientists.

I found these books very interesting and learned a lot about nature, the origin of the human race, astronomy and many other things from them. In spite of all the knowledge contained in these books and the insight they gave me on many subjects, I have not found anything in them to break down my belief in the God of the Bible.

God asked Job “Were you there when I made the world?” Although we can look into the mysteries of the universe, even to the smallest part of an atom, we were not there when everything came into being. The only answer to the question "Who has done it?" will always be: God.

Prayer: Lord, all I can do is utter the words from Psalm 19; ‘How clearly the sky reveals God’s glory! How plainly it shows what he has done!’ Amen
