All belongs to God - 12 June 2026

Ben Fourie

The world and all that is in it belong to the LORD; the earth and all who live on it are his. Psalm 24:1, GNT

After I wrote yesterday’s meditation, it started me thinking about the state of religion in our country. When looking at statistics for gambling, for instance, one is dumbfounded by how many people are caught in this web. The use of drugs is sky-high and corruption is widespread. Many people are swindled out of their money.

The use of foul language is in vogue and many people boast about it, this not even to mention murder, assault, maltreatment of women and children and many more horrible things. Sitting in sackcloth and throwing ashes on your head like the people in the Old Testament seems to be the correct way of mourning for the death of a wonderful country.

But thanks be to the Lord that this is not the full picture of our country. There are still millions of people who are living ethical and moral lives. For example, at both the primary and high schools that my grandchildren attend, the Christian faith is very high on the agenda. Moreover, on many a Sunday, our church is filled to capacity in both services.

My wife and I attended a meeting to listen to a talk by Dr Danie Smith about Antarctica, which he has been to many times. The meeting was started by a minister who read from the Bible and opened with a prayer. He chose the first verse of Psalm 24 because the talk was about another interesting part of God’s creation.

I realised that religion and faith know no boundaries and nobody will ever be able to restrict it or eradicate it, our country included. The whole world from the South Pole to the North Pole and every mountain, sea, tree and plant in between belongs to God and so do we – “the earth and all who live on it are his.”(Psalms 24:1)

Prayer: Lord, how good it is to know that you are the owner of this world. Thank you for entrusting me as keeper of your world. Please help me to be a trustworthy steward. Amen
