Am I doing enough? - 3 June 2026
Ben Fourie
At once he found his brother Simon and told him,"We have found the Messiah." (This word means "Christ".) John 1:41, GNT
I love to read books by Afrikaans author, Hennie Aucamp. Recently I read a book of his called "Bly te kenne". In English, this translates to pleased to meet you. In this book, he writes about the different interesting personalities that have crossed his path. One of these was Lucy Roux. She was an outstandingly good baker –a jack of all trades and very much a master of all.
When she was 98 years old, Hennie visited her and she said something unforgettable. “What have I done with my life? I did a lot of knitting and baked many tarts, but was that enough?” she said. She actually accomplished much more than baking and knitting, but at her advanced age, she asked herself if she had done enough to make her life worthwhile.
This question is causes me a lot of contemplation. What have I done with my life and what am I still doing with the time I have left, especially in a spiritual sense? As Lucy Roux has done, I question whether going to church regularly, reading the Bible and giving to the poor is enough. Is it what God wants from us? Fortunately, God does not measure our success as believers by how much we have done. He uses another criterion.
One day John the Baptist and two of his followers were standing at the river Jordan where he was baptising people when Jesus walked past. John pointed at Jesus and said: “There is the Lamb of God”. The two who were with him immediately followed Jesus. One of them, called Andrew, went to look for his brother Simon and said: “We have found the Messiah.”
Finding Christ is enough. After that you will never again need to ask: “Is what I do enough?” You will be too busy doing good out of gratitude for what he did for you.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we confess that we often do not do enough to show our gratitude for what you have done for us. Help us display our gratitude in a way that honours you. Amen
