A month of Proverbs - 16 March 2026
Ruanne van Zyl
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Proverbs 24:16, KJV
When we read this passage, it gives us a realistic yet hopeful picture of life. Even a righteous person – someone who serves God – falls. We all make mistakes, take wrong turns, and experience setbacks. Faith does not mean perfection.
The passage highlights what makes the difference: righteousness – the righteous rise again. Through God’s grace, we receive the strength not to remain lying in guilt, shame, or self-condemnation. We may stumble, but our identity is not defined by our fall – it is defined by God’s grace.
Failure is often the place where we learn the most. It breaks our pride, teaches us dependence, and helps us treat others with greater compassion. When we rise again, we do so with a deeper understanding of God’s faithfulness.
The enemy wants us to believe that a fall is the end. God says it is only a moment on the journey. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23), and he gives us another chance to keep growing.
I invite you: do not give up on yourself or on others. If God lifts people up again, we should also be gracious and hold onto hope for restoration.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you do not abandon me when I fall. Give me the courage to rise again, to learn from my mistakes, and to keep walking in your grace. Amen.
