Autumn: A time to celebrate! - 19 September 2025

“So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the Lord for seven days; the first day is a day of sabbath rest, and the eighth day also is a day of sabbath rest. On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees – from palms, willows and other leafy trees – and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. Leviticus 23:39-40, NIV
The people of Israel lived very close to nature. When autumn arrived in Israel, it was harvest time. The crops were gathered in, the fruits were ripe and the storehouses were full. This time was appointed by God himself as a festive season – the Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot. In Leviticus 23, the Lord gives Israel instructions about this special time: it is a season of celebration, gratitude and remembrance.
During the Feast of Tabernacles, the Israelites lived in simple shelters made of branches and leaves for seven days. These were not permanent structures; they were temporary, just like the Israelites’ dwellings in the wilderness after the exodus from Egypt. The purpose was to remember God’s care in the past – he provided, protected and guided them through a barren world.
But it was also a celebration of gratitude for the present. The people were to rejoice before the Lord with branches and fruits – symbols of the abundance with which he had blessed them. Gratitude is a central theme in the Feast of Tabernacles. It reminds us that all good gifts come from God (James 1:17) and that we must honour him for the fruit of our labour, the food on our tables and the roof over our heads – even if it’s just a simple hut.
For believers today, the Feast of Tabernacles carries deep symbolic meaning. It reminds us that our earthly dwelling is temporary, but God is preparing an eternal home for us. It calls us to live with joy and gratitude even when our circumstances are simple or imperfect because God is with us, just as he was with Israel in the wilderness.
When autumn comes in your life – a season of harvest, rest and reflection – take time to say thank you. Build a “tabernacle” of remembrance in your heart and invite God into it. Remind yourself of his provision, grace and faithfulness through all your seasons.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for your goodness in every season of my life. In the autumn of my existence, I want to be still and praise you for your provision. Thank you for the fruits of my labour, for food and for protection. Help me to always live before you with joyful gratitude. Amen.
