Man in the twenty-first century and God’s promise - 11 September 2025
Ben Fourie
When God made his promise to Abraham, he made a vow to do what he had promised. Since there was no one greater than himself, he used his own name when he made his vow. He said, "I promise you that I will bless you … Hebrews 6:13-14a, GNT
When we are young, we can hardly wait for our coming of age. It is the first and biggest step into adulthood. When you are an adult, you do not need anyone’s permission to do with your life as you please. The flip side of the coin is that you now have to take full responsibility for what you say and do.
We have been dreaming that man would come of age in the twenty-first century and we seem to have done so – you can say whatever you want, especially on social media; there are very few checks and bounds. With the click of a mouse and the support of our new friend, Artificial Intelligence, we can enter previously unreachable places. The great strides being taken in medical research have brought the dream of immortality a bit closer. One day in the future, when quantum computers will be in use everywhere, this world will bring forth ideas at a pace that we cannot even imagine in our wildest dreams.
In this wonderful world of technology, medical and space science, our story of a God who has created everything – the story of a man called Jesus who died on a cross for our sins, and the idea of a Holy Spirit who will lead and carry us through life – seems more and more difficult for many people to believe. The direct opposite of not believing in God, unfortunately, is that scores of people in this new world are left with a lot of uncertainties about life in the present and the future.
In this new wilderness that we call life today, we can find a lot of comfort in the story the Bible tells us about God. I truly believe in the promise God made to Abraham and I firmly believe that this promise was sealed by Jesus’ death on the cross. I truly believe that God will bless us and keep us on the road in this world that has come of age. Why do I really believe it? Because God took an oath on his own name that he will do it.
I will never doubt him and hope to be able to share this belief with everyone that crosses my path.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, when you were struggling on the cross, you earned the blessing that God had promised for all mankind. Please help me to share this with those who feel scared and are feeling estranged in this very different world, so that they may also believe in your blessing. Amen
