Spring: When the desert begins to bloom - 7 August 2025

Ewald Schmidt

The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. Isaiah 35:1-2a, NIV

To truly understand Isaiah’s words, we need some background information. At the time, the people of Judah were drifting further and further away from the Lord. They began worshipping the idols of the surrounding nations. Violence increased, and the poor were being exploited by the powerful. God sent numerous prophets to warn them that they were heading down a dangerous path, but the people refused to listen.

And then it happened: in 586 BC, the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem. The temple was destroyed, the city walls torn down, and skilled and educated people were taken into exile in Babylon. It was a time of great judgment and loss – a spiritual winter.

But take note: in the Bible, judgment never comes without hope. God’s grace is always available. Even in this dark season, God did not abandon his people. Isaiah brings a message of hope: God will act again. Where there is now only death and destruction, new life will spring forth. The barren desert will bloom like a lily – a symbol of fragility and beauty, of life that emerges where it seems impossible.

He is the One who makes deserts bloom. He brings life where all seems lost. Joy and praise will rise again where only silence reigned.

Isaiah’s words reassure us: desert seasons do not last forever. Just as winter gives way to spring, the Lord’s faithfulness will bring new growth and hope into our lives. Even if you don’t see it yet, it is coming. The first signs of spring are minor: a tiny bud, a tender sprout, a splash of colour in a dull landscape. But it is the beginning of something new.

May you experience this new season and rejoice with all creation in the goodness of our God.

Prayer: Lord, today I pray for the breakthrough of your spring in the winter of my life. I choose to keep trusting you, even though I do not yet see a difference. You always bring new life. No winter lasts forever, and no desert is endless. Your love and faithfulness are greater than my circumstances. May joy and gladness once again fill my life, for you are good. Amen.
