We All Grow Tired
Neville Turley
Abishai, son of Zerulah, came to David’s help, attacked the giant and killed him. Then David’s men made David promise that he would never again go out with them to battle. “You are the hope of Israel and we don’t want to lose you.” They said.
2 Samuel 21:17 (GNB)
There are times in our life and in our work situation when we grow tired. If this persists we may have to heed the advice and help of others and cut down on our activities. It is never an easy thing to do.
Such a moment of truth confronted David in his later years. David had first rocketed to fame as a young shepherd boy when he had slain the giant, Goliath. His gallant action won King Saul’s favour for saving Israel from defeat.
Many years had since passed and after many trials David was now himself the King. Once again the Philistines were at war with Israel. David led his men into battle but soon grew tired. Time and age had caught up with David whose strength, when he was in his prime, was legendary.
A giant named, Ishibenob sought to kill him and would have succeeded. However, Abishai, son of David’s sister, came to his assistance and killed the giant thus saving his royal uncle’s life.
David honoured the promise he made to his men that day. He never personally led his men into battle again, but continued to rule his nation until he died in his 71st year after a reign of just over 40 years.
In our own situation we may well have to play the role of an Abishai and come to the rescue of someone who needs assistance. “We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak to carry their burdens.” Romans 15:1
There are times where we too, grow tired and can no longer be as effective as we want to be. When that time comes God grant us the wisdom to recognise it and gracefully accept the advice and assistance of others.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, may we in all the stages of our life be open to your guidance and the counsel of fellow Christians. For Jesus sake Amen
