Gods abundant blessing - 20 February 2025
Ruanne van Zyl
You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. Psalm 65:11, NIV
Psalm 65 is a psalm of praise that sings of the greatness of God as the One who answers prayers, provides for the earth and blesses his people. It reminds us of the abundant goodness of God and his hand actively working in the world to bring provision and order.
The psalm begins with a song of praise in the temple: “Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion” (Psalm 65:1). Here, God is honoured as the One who answers prayers and forgives sin. David points out that all people come to God because he is the source of grace and reconciliation. This truth still holds true today – God remains faithful to hear prayers and free us from our burden of sin.
In the middle part of the psalm, God’s might and power in nature are described: “… who formed the mountains by your power” and “who stilled … the turmoil of the nations” (Psalm 65:5-7). It reminds us that God is not only intimately involved in our personal lives, but also controls all of creation. He is bigger than any storm or problem we face.
The final section focuses on God’s provision. He visits the earth and makes it fruitful; water overflows and he gives all that is necessary for an abundant harvest. These images of natural blessing point to God’s heart of goodness. He doesn’t just give – he gives in abundance. The phrase in Psalm 65:11, “You crown the year with your bounty”, is a powerful acknowledgement that every good thing we receive ultimately comes from God.
Psalm 65 reminds us to be grateful for God’s blessings in our lives, from the smallest detail to the greatest miracles. He is our Provider and our Saviour. Let us sing of his goodness and trust him in every season of our lives.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your abundant goodness and provision. You care for the earth and me with a love that never ceases. Help me to always see your blessings and praise your name. Amen
