“I turned around to see who was talking to me, and I saw seven gold lampstands, and among them there was what looked like a human being, wearing a robe that reached to his feet, and a gold band around his chest.” Revelation 1:12-13, GNT

 

When John last saw Jesus at his ascension, Jesus was still recognisable as the Jesus who walked with them all over Palestine, sat with them at mealtimes and talked to them. However, in this vision, he saw Jesus in his majesty as King, Ruler and Victor. This vision of Jesus, with eyes that blazed like fire, feet that shone like polished brass and a voice that sounded like a roaring waterfall, is how he looked as King of all kings. The word of God came from his mouth like a two-edged sword to bring God’s message of redemption, but also to symbolise the conquering of all enemies.

 

In this vision, Jesus gave John the assignment to write down everything that was going to happen. John was to send these letters to the seven churches in Asia. Although these seven churches are mentioned, this was also a message to the church throughout the centuries. It is meant for every church and every believer, also for us in the 21st century. In each letter and in all the following visions, something about the Christ is revealed. It tells us who Jesus is and what he can and will do. This is meant to be a comfort to every Christian.

 

Jesus held the seven stars (leaders of the churches) in his hand and was seen to be walking among the seven lampstands or churches. Although the church and her members are to be persecuted, they have the promise that Jesus will hold them in his hand and always be near them. This is true for every one of us. It is the fulfillment of what we read in John 10:28: “I give them eternal life and they shall never die. No one can snatch them away from me.”

 

To confirm all of this, Jesus said to John in Revelation 1:18: “I am the living one! I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I have authority over death and the world of the dead.” What can we desire more than this? He is the answer to all our problems, all our prayers and all our needs.
