DAY 6: WHAT DO YOU "EAT"? - 9 September 2019
By Benescke Janse van Rensburg
Too much junk food caused a teenager in Britain to become blind! This shocking story was recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The article tells of the 17-year-old Brit who, for six years, only ate potato chips, chips, cold cuts and white bread.
Although the boy's body mass index, a way to determine obesity, remained normal, the teen began to suffer from anaemia, his bone density dropped sharply and his levels of Vitamin B-12, vitamin D, copper and selenium plummeted! The report concluded that it was not the junk food that had a toxic effect on his eyesight, but he became blind due to a lack of nutritious and a variety of foods.
We as believers also can become “spiritually blind” when we only eat the “feel good” verses in the Bible and lack to take head of the warnings and principles found in the Word. However, when we study the Word in its entirety and in context, it becomes like the spiritual vitamins that strengthen us to remain standing in the midst of storms.
In Romans 10:17 we read: "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Also in Psalm 119: 103 we read: “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
The more we study the Word, the easier it becomes to trust God as we understand His character better. It also becomes easier to remain standing in difficult times because we know that God never changes. Let's make the Word a priority again. God bless.
Father God, thank you for Your word. Help me to not only grab instant verses and read them out of context, but rather to ask myself what Your Word teaches me about Your character. I ask it in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
