We all have an image in our minds of what God is like. For some of us He is the patriarch, and for others He is the arch feminist, or freedom fighter. Some even see him as Santa Clause who keeps on giving, while some of us try to capture him with our intellect. However, according to one theologian, a God that you can fully comprehend is no god. Other say if you can visualise God in your mind, you come up with a mere shadow of God. And so, the century old arguments of Who and What God is, continue.
What does the Word say?
He is the Alpha and the Omega, the A to Z of the universe. He is eternal and all-knowing. His name is Great above all. He introduces himself to Abraham as “I am” while Paul calls him “Abba” or Father.
He is the Creator. In Genesis, we are told in the most poetic language that God created heaven and earth and the universe with infinite care and with man as the crown of creation.
He is the God who calls (Adam and Eve in the garden. Abraham in the desert. Moses in the burning bush).
"I am the Lord your God." He is the first and only God who makes himself known to man through the word, we read in the introduction to the Ten Commandments. To Moses He is “I am” and to Paul He is “Abba” or Father.
He controls the history of mankind. He knows the past, the present and the future. But more than that: He is in control of your personal history. He has called you by your name and engraved it on the palm of his hand.
The crucial question is: Who is He to you?
One thing we know for certain, there is no-one else in the universe that sees mankind as his beloved children and not just as a plague that needs to be eradicated. This is a God that loved us so much, that He gave his beloved Son to bring us home to the Father.
Prayer: Lord, we are unable to capture you in our minds; we have no words to describe your power and glory to its full extent. Therefore, you come to us in the shape of humble baby and walk the dusty roads with a band of insignificant men to reveal your great love for mankind. Amen
