Day 5: Remember to open the curtains - 7 November 2018
By Benescke Janse van Rensburg
Open your curtains and let the sunlight in! This was the conclusion of a research study by the University of Oregan in America published a few weeks ago. In the study, it was found that bacteria that gather in dust particles in our homes (and make us sick) survive and breed in dark rooms. However, when we open our curtains, allowing natural sunlight to enter the room, this bacteria will be destroyed.
This finding made me think of the words in 1 John 1: 5: "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”
When we cherish sin in our lives, its impact, just like the bacteria that grows in the dark, gets bigger. This is where the enemy wants to keep us. He wants to destroy our lives and he uses fear and guilt to convince us that God will never forgive our sins.
The truth is that God is ready to shine His light into our lives and situations – in order to set us free. In 1 John 1:7 we read: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” And in verse 9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
In which area of your life are you allowing "bacteria" to grow? Is it perhaps a relationship with someone outside of your marriage? Do you struggle to get rid of pornography or too much alcohol on a daily basis? Is it perhaps a love for gossip stories that keeps you in bondage? Or are you struggling with impatience, anger or fear?
Let’s remember that God is LIGHT and in Him there is no darkness at all. He wants us to pull open our curtains so He can shine His light and love into our lives. Let's allow Him to set us free so we can truly experience a life in abundance. God bless.
Father God, thank you that I can pour out my heart before you. Please shine your light into (name the area of your life) and help me to get rid of everything that does not honor You. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
