Day 21: Faith is to believe - 29 June 2018
By Benescke Janse Van Rensburg
[It is always difficult to conclude a series on faith as there are so many aspects that could still be addressed. Nevertheless, thank you to every reader who gave feedback during the series. It remains a great inspiration to hear how God is at work in everybody's lives. Please send your feedback about the series to
My 5-year-old girl recently started cycling without her bicycle’s side wheels. To me it was a proud moment to look at her, with a broad smile, cycling down the road. Initially, of course, there were moments during which I had to catch her to prevent her from falling over. Thereafter, I would usually push her from behind, letting her cycle with new momentum.
This is a relevant picture to what happens in our faith lives. Initially, it takes courage to leave behind the comfort zone of "side wheels" and trust God completely about a specific area in our lives. What if we encounter a bump that causes us to lose our balance? What if we crash and fall? Faith is to believe in advance that God will be there to keep us upright during these times. And when He has put us upright again, He is usually close enough to also give us that push from behind, so we can cycle with new momentum.
Is there an area in your life in which you need to leave your comfort zone and trust God? Listen to the words in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Also in 2 Corinthians 12: 9, God told Paul: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Let’s blow new life into our faith by getting onto the bike with confidence. Let’s cycle without any doubt, knowing that He is closer to us than we realize. God bless!
Father God, as I climb onto my bike of faith, please help me to trust You with (name the area where you need to trust God). Please strengthen me in my weakness through Your Holy Spirit. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
