Day 21: Fearless toward your giant - 29 Novmeber 2017
Benescke Janse van Rensburg
It's late afternoon. In the narrow valley between the Philistines, on the one side, and the Israelites on the other side, David walks toward the giant, Goliath. Inside him, his stomach turns but not in fear. His power lies in God. After all, he experienced in the past how God rescued him from the claws of a bear and lion. He knows that God will never leave, nor forsake him.
As soon as Goliath sees David, he laughs. “Am I a dog that you come at me with a stick?” Nothing derailed David. He was focused. Listen to his answer, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. . . This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!” (1 Samuel 17:45).
Moments later, a stone leaves David's sling. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground. Dead.
The Israelites saw the giant. David looked past the giant and kept his eyes on God. He reminded himself of what God did for Him in the past. God never changes.
From time to time, we all have giants blowing down our necks. Yours may not carry a spear or a sword, but walk around in a short dress tempting you with her words and actions - while your wife sits at home. Your giant may be that bottle of alcohol you try to hide under the sink. Or maybe your giant is your fear of your or your loved ones’ safety, your barrenness, a disease, a fear of not finding a spouse or maybe that you will not be able to pay your bills at the end of the month.
What are you doing with these giants? Are you allowing it to scoff at you day and night? Or do you take a stand like David? You can also walk towards the giant with the same confidence as David: “. . . I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. . . This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
Start swinging your sling by removing things in your life that are holding you back. Meditate on God's promises. Let us remind ourselves of breakthroughs in our past. As with David, God will never leave us, nor forsake us. And get ready (in faith). . . One of these days you might have to run forward like David to finally cut off the giant's head, already laying on it’s nose. God bless.
Father God, thank you for allowing me to walk towards my giant with confidence. Help me to remember that you are much bigger than (name your giant). Give me power today. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
