Day 16: Fearless in humility - 22 November 2017
By Benescke Janse van Rensburg
There is one virtue that is easily identified as a weakness. Yet, if present in our lives, it is precisely what causes us to experience God's presence most intimately in our lives. It is a trait that distinguishes us from the world because it defies logic. And even though it might be difficult to practice, it is always worth it. Humbleness.
In James 4: 6, we read: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” In Psalm 138: 6 the Psalmist reminds us that Godcares for the humble, but He keeps His distance from the proud. In Matthew 5: 5, Jesus said: “God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.” And in 1 Peter 5:6, we read, "So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.”
How is this humility in our lives tested? On a stage in front of a lot of people? No. In the church between believers? No. It is tested when a slow driver blocks our way in traffic when we are on our way to an important meeting. When the cashier gives us the wrong change by accident. Or when someone accidentally bumps into us in the store. How we respond, shows what is going on in our hearts.
Humility is an attitude. Having it means you are able to look for the gold in people and situations. It means we look for ways to serve others instead of just looking for ways to benefit ourselves. We show mercy and demonstrate Jesus' love the best when we choose to compliment rather than criticize. And when we do engage in those tough conversations, it is always done in love – striving for a peaceful end.
Humility does not mean that we allow others to walk all over us, but rather that we find our identity in Jesus Christ. And by doing this, we realize that humility truly is our strength. In John 13:15, Jesus says, “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” Even though Jesus is the Savior of the world, He chose to wash His disciples’ feet – the work of a slave.
Let's follow Jesus’ example today. Let us look for opportunities to serve others and to be His light in this broken world. Let us choose kind words and search for the gold in every person and situation. Remember, meekness is not weakness. Humility is what draws God closer to us. God bless.
Father God, thank you for loving me as I am. Help me understand what humility is and show me where in my life I still have to work on my own attitude towards others. Show me how I can be a light today in this broken world by serving others. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
