Day 1: Who is He? - 1 September 2017
Theme for September: WHO IS HE?
By Benescke Janse van Rensburg
Seven seconds is, according to clinical psychologist Linda Blair, in her book Straight Talk, the time it takes for us to decide whether we like or dislike someone after we have met them. She describes it as an unconscious process.
I wonder: Do you like God? Do you worship Him because you know and love Him or simply because you think it's the "right thing" to do? Think about this question.
After we meet someone, our initial perception and opinion of the person can change after spending time with them – especially going through a difficult time with them, as a person's true character is then highlighted.
The same goes for our relationship with God. The initial excitement after salvation can easily wear off when things do not work out as planned. Your marriage for, instance, still ended in a divorce or a sick, loved one still died, even though you prayed with faith. Or you have been praying for months and even years for a certain breakthrough and it still has not happened. How does it affect your perception of who God is? Do you still believe that He is in charge of your life? Do you still believe that He can perform miracles and work everything together in your life for the good?
In James 4: 8 we read: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
God desires to demonstrate His kindness and love towards us. The problem is that we sometimes get so caught up in our daily tasks that we call ourselves believers, but we don’t make time to get to know Him better. So here is my challenge for the month of September: Let's ask the Holy Spirit to help us discover God's character in a new, fresh way. Let's identify the wrong perception we have about Him and deliberately look for His love and kindness around us. We may be surprised at His presence all around us. God bless and a happy Spring day!
Father God, thank you for your kindness and love. Please open my spiritual eyes and ears so that I can get to know You more intimately in this month. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Assignment for the day:
• Think about this: Do you worship God because you know and love Him or simply because you think it's the "right thing" to do? Write down why you love Him and thank Him for that.
Feedback: If you have any question or want to share something, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail to
