A tale of two songs - 16 May 2017

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)
It is not good for any of us to walk through life alone. None of us were created to live in isolation, devoid of human contact. Humans are social animals. We crave company even though we do not always want to admit it.
It explains the popularity of the evergreen song – “You’ll never walk alone” which Rodgers and Hammerstein composed for the musical “Carousel”.
It has been the theme song of the Liverpool football club for many years. One would need a heart of stone not to be moved when 50000 spectators in a jam-packed stadium sing with one voice, that whatever may happen, they have each other and will never walk alone again.
The song is a beautiful expression of solidarity. Unfortunately at the end of the game, the spectators go their separate ways and the lonely are alone again.
Tragically many Christians are alone. Through circumstances, often outside their control, they find themselves leading a solitary existence.
That is when we need to stand on the promise of God our Saviour – “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
The song, “I’ll walk with God” by Brodsky and Webster, which was sung by Mario Lanza in the “Student Prince” tells us how to combat loneliness.
I’ll walk with God
I’ll take his hand
I’ll talk with God, he’ll understand.
I’ll pray to him
Each day to him
And he’ll hear the words that I say
His hands will guide my throne and rod
And I’ll never walk alone
While I walk with God.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and the assurance of your Son and the Holy Spirit that we are never alone. Grant us grace to walk in faith and glorify your name. Amen
