Day 17: He can give us a new vision - 25 October 2016
By Benescke Janse van Rensburg
The “Bridge to Nowhere” is one of the most famous landmarks for motorists when they enter Cape Town via the N1. Construction to this unfinished road on high pillars started during the 1940s to ease traffic in the city centre. The building project stopped during the 1970s due to a lack of funds. Ever since, it was left unfinished.
Half a century later, the city council in Cape Town decided, in celebration of Cape Town’s selection at the World Design Capital, to invite the public to submit ideas as to what should happen to this unfinished bridge. If they liked an idea that was submitted, they would implement it.
In our lives, we often have to make important decisions. Because every decision will have consequences, fear can grip our hearts. What if we take the wrong turn? If we do not consult God, the decision will cause our lives to become like the “bridge to nowhere”. It will strip us of our passion and cause us to be stagnant and without a vision.
What decisions do you have to make today? Get married or leave the relationship? Stay in your current position at work or get a new job? Move or stay? Or perhaps you have to decide if you will have children or not.
God knows your future and we can consult Him for wisdom. In James 1: 5 we read: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” In Isaiah 30:21 we also read: “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” And in Proverbs 16: 9 we read: “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”
Is it easy to take that step of faith and to make a decision? Not always. Why? It means closing the door to other options that you might regret. However, God can lead us away from a stagnant position and give us a new vision for our lives that will surprise us. And even if we did take the wrong turn-off, His grace is there to guide us back to the right road for our lives. What is the next step for your bridge? I don’t know, but God does. Let’s trust Him. God bless.
Father God, thank You that You know which way I have to walk. Please help me to keep my eyes on You, listening to your lead. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Assignment for the day: If you have to make important decisions again; sit down and write down the benefits and challenges to all options. Pray about it and ask God to guide you in making good decisions. Trust the peace in your heart.
