Bible Society of South Africa

It is becoming increasingly difficult to do business honestly. Bribery and corruption are becoming the norm in certain sectors of the economy. The Bible teaches us that although shady dealings bring temporary profit, transparent transactions ensure the long term survival of businesses and the economy.

In Proverbs 17:8 we read, “Many people believe: A bribe works miracles like a magic charm that brings good luck."

However:

“Being greedy causes trouble for your family, but you protect yourself by refusing bribes.” Proverbs 15:27

"And they keep their promises, no matter what the cost. They lend their money without charging interest, and they don’t take bribes to hurt the innocent. Those who do these things will always stand firm." Psalm 15:4b-5

"It isn’t right to be unfair, but some people can be bribed with only a piece of bread. Don’t be selfish and eager to get rich – you will end up worse off than you can imagine." Proverbs 28:21-22

"Corruption makes fools of sensible people, and bribes can ruin you." Ecclesiastes 7:7

In a country like South Africa where corruption and bribery feature in the news every day, it is easy to focus so much on important people who bribe others or offer tenders and contracts to family members to enrich themselves, and then start thinking it is the norm. Read the verses above again and do your work today with the knowledge that the Bible teaches that God expects us to do business with integrity.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, make everyone in our country aware that corruption and bribery are not the answer to success in the workplace. Grant us the wisdom to do business honestly. Amen.
