Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.…. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.  1 Thessalonians 5:1-2, 10-11

The last part of 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 and the beginning of chapter 5 discuss Jesus’ return. As with all prophetic Scripture, it’s easy to get caught up trying figure out dates and times and facts about the end of the world. We’ve all read the stories of different people who, at different times, have been certain that they know when Jesus will return.

However, as with others prophetic passage, this portion of Scripture is practical. It is designed to challenge us to godly living today. In other words, the comfort of knowing that we have salvation in Christ and an eternal home with him must not lull us into apathy where we live for the temporary experiences of the world.

We are called to be ready for Jesus' coming without ever knowing precisely when he will come. Like a cricket fielder in the slips, you don't want to be caught staring into the sun when the batsman nicks the ball your way. And you don't want to be working against the other fielders, either, colliding into one another because you aren’t paying attention. You want to have your eyes on the ball, to be ready to run and dive for the ball, and also be prepared for the possibility that you could wait for a while before anything comes your way. If Jesus came today, would you be ready?

Furthermore, Paul also instructs us to encourage each other and build each other up as we live in anticipation of Jesus’ return. We all get bogged down with the things of this world from time to time, let’s take the time to refocus our minds heavenward and encourage each ther today.

Prayer: Lord God, help us to be ready for the day when Jesus comes to restore all things and to put creation right. Help me keep my eye on the ball today; to focus on the things that are important, and to build up and encourage my brothers and sisters. Amen
